CE's Certification & Licensing:
CE's, Certification and Licensing are three different entities...
1) CE's or Continuing Education credit is coursework that has been approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork- (NCBTMB). Most state massage boards will accept these hours towards the required CE hours needed to re-certify for a massage license. Please confirm with your state massage board to make sure they accept NCBTMB approved courses.
You will receive 6 CE hours of 'Hand's On' CE's per day long workshop that you attend. You will also receive an additional 3 CE hours of 'Home Study' CE's. If you complete my full six day training, you will receive 36 'Hand's On' CE's plus 18 'Home Study' CE's. To receive the hours you must register for the course, sign in each day, and complete the course. You must also complete an evaluation of the course at the end. I will email you an approved form which will state your hours, which you can then submit to NCBTMB or your appropriate massage board. If you need your CE's sooner, you can ask for that.
2) Certification... There is no government recognized board that 'certifies' for Thai Massage or Thai Yoga Bodywork. Certification comes from teachers, such as myself, that design a curriculum that they deem worthy for their students to learn before offering sessions. Being certified by me is my 'stamp of approval,' I have confidence in my system and I know that once you complete all the steps that I can be assured that you will give a safe and top quality treatment. Once you complete all the requirements, you will receive a '54 hour certificate of completion' in the mail that documents your achievement. This certificate will list you as a certified 'Thai Yoga Bodywork Practitioner.' I can then recommend you to clients and you will be eligible to receive 'check out' sessions from students wishing to complete their certification requirements. Certified practitioners are also invited back to assist any of my trainings.
There is no additional charge for certification. There are no additional courses or levels that need to be taken to maintain certification. Many Thai massage teachers decide to teach their coursework in a system of levels. These levels are arbitrary and will have different curriculum depending on who you study with. I chose to not use a system with levels, but rather to teach a series of six classes each focused on a different body area and body position.
To become certified, one must complete all six full day courses, document 18 hours of practice sessions and be 'checked out' by a certified practitioner. The practitioner must send me an email letting me know how the treatment was and if they approve the candidate for certification. I can help you find a certified practitioner in your area, or you can also choose to come to Asheville and work with me (highly recommend). The practice part of the requirement is done outside of class time.
Certification is optional. You do not need to complete the certification process in order to get your CE's.
Certification is not the same as receiving a state license and in no way does it authorize one to legally charge for this service.
I reserve the right to withhold certification or revoke certification if I have reason to believe that you are not representing this work with integrity.
Certification is available via Live Hands On Classes as well my Home Study courses.
3) Licensing falls under the jurisdiction of the state. A license is usually needed anytime you want to set up a business. Most states regulate the field of massage therapy and require a license in order to legally charge money for a massage treatment. Not all states have massage requirements and not all touch therapies are regulated by state massage boards. You must check with your state to see what the local laws regarding touch, massage, yoga, & assisted yoga are, as each state is different. In most states you need to be a licensed massage therapist in order to market yourself as doing any type of 'Massage' and/or 'Bodywork.' In the state on North Carolina, the Board of Massage Therapy lists 'Thai Yoga Massage' as a modality requiring licensure. In the state of Georgia, they do not. Please check with your state board before marketing or charging for this service. In all states, consenting adults are allowed to practice Thai Yoga Bodywork without a license as long as it is not offered as a professional service with a monetary charge.
